Announcing New Services...
As of April 1, 2020 we are excited to offer a full range of college consulting services.
These services are offered in partnership with Tina Weber, a long-time adjunct professor and Admissions Interviewer at Tufts University, and her business, A Starting Line.
Our methodology starts with getting to know the student through meetings, interviews, and questionnaires. Once we understand the student’s background, motivations, aptitudes, needs, likes, and current status on his or her college search journey, we begin to create a strategy through directed research into potential and appropriate schools. We also help our students build a cohesive story and an attractive application package to present during those college applications, as well as manage the application process.
What is a Writing Coach?
Simply put, a writing coach helps students improve their writing by helping them learn to identify their own areas for improvement. Typically, these areas include organization and support of ideas, punctuation, and grammar. Additionally, and very importantly, a good writing coach helps students build self confidence and begin to find their 'writer's voice,' that certain something that makes an essay or even a research paper enjoyable to read.
Each student is an individual with their own needs, whether it's remediation or enrichment. We assess each student's needs by meeting with the student, reviewing recent writing assignments and discussing perceived needs.
And, most importantly, we strive to make the tutoring process enjoyable and reasonably challenging while also sparking within the student an interest for writing.
College Application Essays
It's summer; that means it's time to work on college application essays. We help seniors write compelling essays that tell a story unique to each student - something that college admission officers look for. We spend time getting to know our students so that we can best help develop ideas for essays and then turn those ideas into a special piece of writing.
This NYT article summarizes what I tell prospective clients. The essay should tell a compelling story and reveal the character of the applicant/student.
We can also provide editing for students who have completed their essays.
Our students are accepted to:
- Harvard University
- Harvard Divinity School
- UC San Diego
- Carnegie Mellon
- Johns Hopkins
- University of Massachusetts, Amherst
- Emory University
- University of Chicago
Praise for our work:
As an individual with no secular formal education my dream of attending Harvard Divinity School was a daunting if not impossible task. Enter Amy Garbis. Amy guided me with a sensitive and trained eye through the complicated application process. From a personal statement to a written essay, Amy clarified, edited and organized my words in a way that energized and inspired me to reach for my goals. Four years later, after receiving my MTS from Harvard University, I feel empowered to continue my studies and writings into the next phase of my life. Thank you Amy!

We went to Amy upon a friend's recommendation, and I am so glad that we did. Amy's guidance and advice helped my son craft the essays in his own words that reflect himself. My son was admitted to his top choice school in early action and we really appreciate Amy's help. Amy is also very pleasant to work with. We highly recommend Amy if you need help with college essays. - - Jean C.
I wanted to take time to thank you for helping me through the writing process; your insight was very helpful and I am very happy with the two essays that have come out of the process. -- CK (common & supplemental applications)
I have many new ideas and a much clearer sense of direction thanks to you, and am very excited about continuing my revisions. - SL (common app)
Amy coached my son on his college essay. That was one of the best decisions for his college application. We decided to ask Amy for help almost at the very last minute for early decision admissions. Amy was flexible and and accommodating in working with my son’s schedule, coaching and guiding him in writing the essay. Finally, my son was accepted by his first choice school, a top notch university, as early decision. Certainly, Amy’s help played an important role for my son’s successful application. We are very happy with the result and strongly recommend Amy if you need help with the college essay. - Jane L.
